CHAPTER : 2

SUMMARY

As there were no direct flights to Lima, Leila had to change planes at New York. On the plane, she sat beside a man called Marten Lander. She told him she was an Egyptian working on a UNESCO exchange programme in archaeology. He said he was a mining engineer having a US passport, but was born in South Africa.

Leila had been interested in archaeology as Dr Hafez; a friend of her father’s used to tell her about his excavations. She decided to follow his footprints and take up archaeology. She took her degree in Rome. She refused to study in Cairo University so as not to let anyone speak about special treatment.

Marten seemed interested in her work. When she read some papers she was taking to Dr Hafez, he wanted to read them, but she didn’t give him the chance. She put them in the pocket of the seat in front of her and she slept. When she woke up, she noticed him looking through the papers. He said he was looking for his in flight magazine. She gave him hers.

At the immigration, Martin stood behind her. When she met Dr Hafez, she introduced Marten to him. At the customs, she was let through when she showed them her UNESCO papers.
