CHAPTER : 5

SUMMARY

Leila was worried because Amalia was so unfriendly towards her. She went to see Dr Hafez. He had problems with his lap-top computer. He would go to Qunco to get it fixed and would meet the UNESCO people before their coming for the inspection. He asked Leila to accompany him. When she told him Amalia wasn’t friendly, he said she was a good archaeologist and was good-natured. She might be professionally jealous.

Dr Hafez, Leila and Amalia went to Quenco. Dr Hafez went to the project office and Leila wandered off into the old part of town. Feeling tired and having a headache, she searched for a café to have a cold drink. Looking for a café, she saw Amalia sitting with a man at the same table. She concluded he was Martin Lander. She went directly to the hotel where she and Dr Hafez agreed to meet at twelve noon. She let him back to the café, but Amalia and Lander had left and two others were sitting at the same table. Dr Hafez said Amalia wouldn’t do anything wrong because he trusted her. He asked Leila not to be suspicious and to be like her sister Samira.

Leila was still thinking of how Martin Lander came to know Amalia. As soon as she reached the camp, she logged on the Internet. She got a list of the places where United Mining was working. She found out that all its operations in Peru ended in 1999. It had no plans for mining at the present time. This proved that Lander was a liar.
